FIX: use /sbin/nologin for service accounts
2026-09-28 13:05:26 -04:00
Josh Patterson 21222ff119 FIX: use /sbin/nologin for service accounts
These accounts existed only for container UID mapping and filesystem
ownership, but user.present omitted shell:, so Salt fell through to the
platform useradd default and every one of them got /bin/bash. Pin them to
/sbin/nologin so none can be used as an interactive login or `su -` target.

socore keeps /bin/bash: `su socore -c '/usr/sbin/so-repo-sync'` in soup and
so-kernel-upgrade execs the account's passwd shell, and operator docs tell
users to su to socore. soqemussh keeps /bin/bash as an SSH login account.

elastic-agent, elastic-agent-pr and kafka are included alongside the accounts
named in the issue, being the same class with the same unset shell, so the
default is uniform.

Cron is unaffected: cronie runs jobs via the crontab SHELL (default /bin/sh),
not the passwd shell. suricata is the only account changed here that owns a
crontab, and somon has shipped as nologin with a working cron job already.
The zeek `runuser -l zeek` calls all run inside so-zeek via docker.run/exec,
so they resolve the shell from the image, not the host.

Verified on a 3.4.0 managersearch + sensor grid: highstate converges with the
shell as the only change and no failures, is idempotent on a second run, all
containers stay up, SOC still issues a Kratos login flow, and the suricata
surilogcompress cron job runs post-change ((suricata) CMD/CMDEND in
/var/log/cron) while `su - suricata` is now refused.

Fix user creation failing with a valid password
2026-09-18 17:12:09 -04:00
Mike Reeves b71fd93f9d Stop docker exec from consuming so-user's piped password
Adding a user failed with "Password does not meet the minimum requirements"
for passwords that were well over the eight character minimum.

so-user reads the password from stdin in updatePassword, but verifyEnvironment
runs first and calls kratosCurl, which ran docker exec with -i. That attaches
stdin and drains the pipe the caller sent the password on, so the later
read -rs saw EOF, password was empty, and expr length "" tripped the minimum
length check.

No kratosCurl or hydraCurl call sends a body on stdin; every one passes it as
a -d argument, so -i was never needed. Dropping it leaves the admin API
responses unchanged.

so-client had the same wrapper for the Hydra admin API. It does not currently
read stdin, but the flag drains its caller's pipe just the same, so it is
dropped there too.

Fix config tree error from the docker.networks setting
2026-09-18 15:41:25 -04:00
Mike Reeves d8884dbd99 Document sobridge alongside the soauth network settings
sobridge carries most containers but held no annotation, so it was absent from
the config tree entirely. Its pillar entry is an empty map, so annotating it
adds a setting with no children for docker.networks.soauth.range to collide
with, and the tree still builds.

docker.map.jinja fills in sobridge's range and gateway at render time from
docker.range and docker.gateway, and resets the entry when it is not a mapping,
so nothing writes keys underneath it.

The sentence about sobridge is dropped from the soauth range description now
that sobridge documents itself.
2026-09-18 14:37:11 -04:00
Mike Reeves 6c0d4c15e8 Annotate the soauth network leaves instead of the networks map
SOC reported "Malformed config setting (docker.networks.soauth.range): Setting
name 'networks' conflicts with another similarly named setting" and refused to
render the config tree.

soc_docker.yaml annotated docker.networks itself, and every key in that block
was a scalar, so FlattenAnnotations registered docker.networks as a setting.
defaults.yaml holds a nested map there, so FlattenPillar separately registered
docker.networks.soauth.range, .gateway and .manager_only, and
HydrateAnnotations unions the two sets. The config tree gives each id segment
either a value or children, never both, so addToNode pushed docker.networks as
a childless leaf and then threw when docker.networks.soauth.range tried to
descend through it.

The annotations move down to the three leaves that actually carry values, so
docker.networks is a plain branch. This matches docker.containers, which is
nested the same way and has never carried annotations of its own.

docker.ulimits and the per-container networks list are unaffected: their pillar
values are lists rather than maps, so they stay single settings.

Mike Reeves 65e261475d Mention Hydra in the soauth network description
The description was written alongside the Kratos change and named only the
Kratos admin API, but so-hydra now sits on soauth too.

The trailing note about rebuilding the firewall is dropped, since the setting
is readonly and cannot be changed from SOC in the first place.
2026-09-18 10:17:20 -04:00
Mike Reeves bbc28c88b7 Isolate the Hydra admin API on the soauth docker network
The Hydra admin API creates OAuth clients and introspects tokens without
authentication, relying on network isolation the same way Kratos does, but
so-hydra published 0.0.0.0:4445:4445 and sat on sobridge. With userland-proxy
left at its default of true, Docker ran a proxy listener on the host, so any
container reached the admin API through the manager IP or the bridge gateway
regardless of its docker network.

so-hydra now sits alone on soauth and no longer publishes 4445. 4444 is still
published, so the nginx proxy for /oauth2/token and the well-known endpoints is
unchanged. so-soc is already dual homed from the Kratos change and reaches the
admin API over soauth, so only its hostUrl moves. wait_for_hydra polls the
container address instead of the host port.

so-client reaches the admin API through docker exec, mirroring so-user. Exit
codes still propagate, so the --fail-with-body error handling is unchanged.

so-hydra is removed in up_to_3.4.0 alongside so-kratos and so-soc so the
highstate recreates it with the correct network membership. The auth network
range is already handled by set_soauth_range.

Josh Patterson 1f1d3ded41 FIX: root-own the Salt default tree so a SOC file-write cannot reach root code
/opt/so/saltstack/default holds the source for every root-executed script --
/usr/sbin, the reactors, _runners/_modules/_beacons, the master engines and
salt-relay.sh -- plus every state the root master renders. SOC mounts
/opt/so/saltstack rw as uid 939, so root-owning /usr/sbin alone was not
enough: the next highstate would copy attacker-controlled bytes out of the
tree into the root-owned destination and run them.

SOC never writes under default/, it only reads it. Every SOC write targets
local/, which stays socore-owned, as does /opt/so/state. No mode is enforced
on default/ -- SOC reads that tree, and 750/640 would break its config load.

Also stops copy_new_files(), so-saltstack-update and setup from chowning the
tree back to socore, and replaces preserve: True in soup_scripts.sls, which
carried uid/gid in from the /tmp staging tree and would have undone the
ownership before the first post-soup highstate.
2026-09-16 10:34:21 -04:00
Josh Patterson 1e86be11b2 FIX: install /usr/sbin management scripts as root
Salt installed the so-* scripts into /usr/sbin owned by unprivileged service
UIDs (939/socore, plus 930-960 per service) at mode 755, while root executes
those same files from cron, systemd and state cmd.run. Any file-write
primitive as one of those UIDs was therefore root.

Two mechanisms behind this are not visible in the diff:

file.recurse also manages the destination directory, so /usr/sbin itself was
chowned to whichever service UID ran last. A directory's owner may always
chmod it, so that UID could replace even the scripts already declared
user: root -- so-config-backup, so-suricata-eve-clean, so-nsm-mount-nvme.
usr_sbin_perms now pins the directory to root:root 555, the mode the
filesystem RPM ships.

Omitting user:/group: is a no-op on files that already exist, because
check_perms only chowns when a user is named. Explicit user: root is what
lets upgraded grids self-heal on the next highstate, and what makes a
revert chown back rather than silently do nothing.

2026-09-15 13:10:33 -04:00
Josh Patterson b018277d68 FIX: prevent joining minion from executing code as root on the manager
so-minion exported every line of the minion-controlled /opt/so/install.txt
into its root shell and wrote the values unescaped into a Jinja-rendered
pillar, allowing a rogue node to redefine PILLARFILE or run code on the
master at the next pillar compile. pcapspace also fed minion-returned
disk.usage output into bash arithmetic, which evaluates array subscripts.

- Parse install.txt against an allowlist of known keys; never export
- Validate MINION_ID before building pillar paths; make them readonly
- Validate node type, IP, interface, hostname, heap and core values
before any pillar is written; strip braces and control chars from
  the free-text node description
- Require a numeric disk size before pcapspace arithmetic
- Refuse manager node types on add/addVM so a remote node cannot
rewrite the CA pillar; only setup may create them

FIX: prevent so-sensor-clean runaway loop and concurrent instances
2026-09-14 14:53:12 -04:00
Josh Patterson 84cd966736 FIX: prevent so-sensor-clean runaway loop and concurrent instances
The cleanup loop had no progress check or pass limit, so once /nsm was over
threshold with nothing left to reclaim it spun at full speed, writing 1.1 GB /
12.5M lines to sensor_clean.log in five hours. Stop when a pass removes
nothing, when a pass frees no space, or at MAX_PASSES, and drop the per-pass
"no old files" logging in favor of one actionable line.

Replace the pgrep guard with flock -n. A find|while read subshell inherits the
parent's argv, so pgrep -cf counted one instance as hundreds; it was also
check-then-act, which let cron stack up overlapping runs.

Paths now derive from SENSOR_DIR with env-overridable LOG/LOCK so the
over-threshold path can be tested against a scratch filesystem.

2026-09-11 11:00:34 -04:00
Mike Reeves cb48909578 Add x86-64-v3 CPU pre-flight check to soup
Upstream Elastic now ships binaries built for the x86-64-v3
micro-architecture level. This is not a Security Onion choice: nodes whose
CPUs predate x86-64-v3 can no longer run Elastic's own builds, so those
nodes break once they are upgraded.

Check for support before soup modifies anything, and require the operator
to type "override" to proceed when a node is unsupported or offline.

Runs after upgrade_check so a grid that is already current exits without
prompting. Targets only the roles that run a container built from the
so-elastic-agent image, using the role lists already maintained in
salt/reactor/pillar_push_map.yaml. Adds --skip-cpu-check to bypass the gate
for automation, and exit code 162 when the operator declines to override.

Josh Patterson 9652a2053b Stop the Zeek container gracefully
zeekctl's post-terminate archives the final logs in the background and returns
immediately unless StopWait is set, so the container exits and takes the archiving
with it, stranding unarchived logs in /nsm/zeek/spool/tmp on every restart. Docker's
default 10s grace is also too tight for the entrypoint's SIGTERM trap; overrunning it
means SIGKILL and crash directories on the next start.

Both are needed. StopWait alone gives the stop more work to do inside the same 10s
window, which was measured ending in SIGKILL with logs stranded in the spool.

disabled.sls used docker rm -f, which never delivers SIGTERM, so stop the container
before removing it.

Mike Reeves cf3a4ebc27 Isolate the Kratos admin API on a dedicated soauth docker network
The Kratos admin API is unauthenticated by design and relies on network
isolation, but so-kratos published 0.0.0.0:4434:4434 and daemon.json leaves
userland-proxy at its default of true. Docker therefore ran a proxy listener
on the host, and any container reached the admin API through the manager IP
or the bridge gateway regardless of its docker network.

so-kratos now sits alone on a new soauth network and no longer publishes
4434. 4433 is still published, so nginx is unchanged. so-soc is dual homed
and reaches the admin API over soauth, with publicHostUrl set explicitly.
so-user reaches it through docker exec, and wait_for_kratos polls the
container address instead of the host port.

firewall/iptables.jinja hardcoded sobridge in every generated DNAT, ACCEPT,
masquerade and isolation rule, so it is now driven by a docker:networks map
and a per-container networks list. Containers that do not declare one
default to sobridge, and .ip still resolves to the primary network's
address. soauth is only created on the roles that run so-kratos.

Setup already allows a custom docker range, so it now also prompts for the
auth network range and writes it to the docker pillar. Grids on the default
range need no decision during soup, since they get the same 172.17.2.0/24 a
fresh install would. Grids that set a custom range are prompted, defaulting
to the adjacent /24, and unattended upgrades take that default with a notice
rather than blocking.

so-kratos and so-soc are removed in up_to_3.4.0 so the highstate recreates
them with the correct network membership.

Josh Patterson 094b4d5e86 Detect hand-placed local/salt files in Auto State Apply
Auto State Apply fires on SOC config saves and on suricata/strelka rule
updates. Files a user creates or edits by hand under
/opt/so/saltstack/local/salt/ change no pillar, so nothing fired and the
change waited for the next scheduled highstate, now 120 minutes by default.
That gap is the 3.2 Known Issue in the docs.

Watch the directories the docs tell users to edit, and route them through
the push pipeline that already exists:

  zeek/policy                       -> zeek    (covers intel/ and custom/)
  zeek/zkg                          -> zeek
  elasticsearch/files/ingest        -> elasticsearch
  elasticsearch/roles               -> elasticsearch
  logstash/pipelines/config/custom  -> logstash

Tags are pillar_push_map.yaml app names, so the existing entries already
carry the right state and compound target, and no map entry changes.

Rename the beacon rules_beacon -> local_files_beacon. Rules are now one of
five kinds of file it watches, and the new name matches how its sibling
postgres_pillar_beacon is named: source, then what it watches.

Replace push_suricata.sls and push_strelka.sls with one push_files.sls bound
to salt/beacon/*/local_files_beacon/*, which looks the tag up in
pillar_push_map.yaml the same way push_pillar.sls does. The map's suricata
and strelka targets match the compounds those two reactors hardcoded, so
rule pushes are unchanged. The app comes from the event tag rather than the
payload because salt's beacon loop pops the beacon's tag key off the data.

Key watermarks by watched directory instead of by tag. zeek/policy and
zeek/zkg both emit the tag zeek, and a shared watermark would make them
overwrite each other's digest and emit on every poll.

Prune .git from the fingerprint walk. zkg packages must be git clones with a
clean working tree, so the watched tree carries full git metadata; walking it
every 15s is wasted work and git's own index and ref mtime churn would fire a
grid-wide zeek apply on its own. Placing or updating a package always touches
working-tree files too, so detection is unaffected.

The watch is an allowlist rather than the whole local salt tree because salt
writes into that tree itself: hypervisor/hosts/ is rewritten continuously by
virtual_node_manager.py and virtual_power_manager.py, libvirt/images/ holds
multi-GB qcow2 files, and elasticfleet/files/so_agent-installers/,
elasticsearch/files/users, ca/files/ and filebeat/files/ are all state-written.
Watching any of them would either self-retrigger or make the 15s poll walk
gigabytes.

Mike Reeves 9f6679c043 Use argv arrays for telegraf inputs.exec commands
Telegraf 1.39 deprecated bare string entries in inputs.exec commands and
will drop them in 1.45, warning on every start:

W! DeprecationWarning: Value "/scripts/esindexsize.sh" for option
"command" of plugin "inputs.exec" deprecated since version 1.39.0

Each entry is now a single-element argv array. Array form skips shell
parsing, which is fine here: every command is a bare script path from
telegraf's scripts list, no args or shell metacharacters.

Mike Reeves 5e9fd4a45b Remove the stock EL9 kernel once a node is running UEK8
The UEK8 rollout installs the new kernel and flips the boot default, but
leaves the stock EL9 (RHCK) packages behind: disk in /boot and a stale
GRUB entry on every upgraded node.

They cannot be removed in the same pass that installs UEK8. dnf's
protect_running_kernel refuses to erase the booted kernel-core, so the
removal has to wait until the node has rebooted onto 6.x. Waiting is the
safer sequencing anyway -- the node proves it comes up on UEK8 before its
fallback is deleted -- so this does not remove RHCK from the uek7 branch
either, where dnf would allow it.

so-kernel-upgrade grows a --cleanup mode that does only the removal and
no-ops (exit 0, with a log line) on a node not yet running UEK8. Its uek8
branch, which previously reported "nothing to do", now runs that cleanup
along with set_default_kernel_conf -- which also closes a gap where a node
that came up on UEK8 straight from a fresh install never had
DEFAULTKERNEL=kernel-uek-core written.

The common highstate calls --cleanup gated on the running kernel, so the
cleanup lands grid-wide as each node reboots: fresh installs reboot at the
end of setup, upgraded nodes whenever the admin schedules it. The rpm
check inside the script is the idempotency guard, so subsequent highstates
cost an rpm query rather than a dnf transaction, and the package list is
not duplicated into the state where it could drift.

Josh Patterson 12744353fb Allow ten custom logstash pipelines instead of five 2026-08-21 10:21:12 -04:00
Josh Patterson 52fc0cb828 Expose Logstash log.level and log.format in SOC
The Logstash log level was hardcoded to info in log4j2.properties, and
logstash.yml carried no log.level key, so the only way to raise verbosity
for troubleshooting was to hand-edit a file that the next highstate
overwrites. Add log_x_level and log_x_format to logstash:config so both
render into logstash.yml, annotated as advanced per-node settings with
the value sets Logstash 9.3.7 accepts.

log4j2.properties gains jinja, so it moves to log4j2.properties.jinja and
is rendered by a discrete lslog4j2 state rather than the lsetcsync
recurse, which cannot rename. The recurse exclude_pat now matches both
names so it neither copies the template verbatim nor lets clean: True
delete the rendered file, matching how pipelines.yml is already handled.

The appender layout is selected at render time so log.format actually
changes the log output instead of being a dead setting, keeping the
existing file name so nothing downstream moves. rootLogger.level now
follows ls.log.level rather than claiming info regardless of the
configured level.
2026-08-21 09:47:09 -04:00
Josh Patterson 5c3a69d742 Warn about two pipeline_settings combinations that stop a pipeline
Grid testing every permitted value on the manager pipeline surfaced two
combinations the UI allows that take the pipeline down, neither of which
the descriptions mentioned.

pipeline.ordered: true requires pipeline.workers: 1; with more workers the
pipeline fails to start with "enabling the 'pipeline.ordered' setting
requires the use of a single pipeline worker". Also correct the auto
wording: it only engages when workers is explicitly set to 1.

queue.max_bytes larger than the free space on /nsm/logstash fails queue
creation with "Unable to allocate N more bytes", rather than merely being
inadvisable.
2026-08-20 17:33:34 -04:00
Josh Patterson c1f256e630 Correct pipeline_settings annotations against Logstash 9.3.7
Widen the byte-size regex, which rejected values Logstash accepts and so
blocked the save in SOC: bare-letter units (1g, 512m, 64k), decimals
(1.5gb), whitespace before the unit, and a bare integer. Allow whitespace
in dead_letter_queue.retain.age (5 d). Both stay lowercase-only, matching
byte_value.rb and AbstractPipelineExt.parseToDuration.

Fix description gaps: queue.checkpoint.retry is a Windows/SAN workaround
Elastic does not otherwise recommend, batch metrics sampling is technical
preview, queue.checkpoint.interval is deprecated in 9.1, compression makes
a queue unreadable by Logstash before 9.2, flush_check_interval has a
1000ms floor, max_events counts unread events, and the path settings are
created by Logstash but reject symlinks. Note which settings apply only to
persisted queues or an enabled DLQ.

Drop the undocumented 'disabled' value from queue.compression.

Numeric fields stay stricter than NumericSetting, which has no validator
and would accept negatives, floats and NaN in event counts and intervals.
2026-08-20 16:35:31 -04:00
Josh Patterson 356da00395 Ignore malformed logstash pipeline_settings instead of failing the state
A non-mapping value under logstash:pipeline_settings:<pipeline> made
config.sls raise "'str object' has no attribute 'get'", which failed the
whole logstash.config render rather than just skipping the bad value.
pipelines.yml.jinja already guarded this; config.sls now does too, and
logs which pipeline was ignored.

Josh Patterson d62c53fc92 Merge remote-tracking branch 'origin/3/dev' into fix/boot-highstate-marker 2026-08-19 11:39:48 -04:00
Josh Patterson 2f2187f714 Write setup-complete marker on non-manager nodes
so-boot-highstate.service was never enabled outside managers: only the
manager branch of so-setup called mark_setup_complete, so the marker its
service.enabled gates on never existed on sensors, search nodes, receivers,
etc.

Move the marker state into salt.minion.boot_highstate as the sole owner
within a highstate. Non-managers never apply salt.minion during setup, so
reaching it means setup is done and the marker is unconditional -- this also
heals already-installed nodes. Managers keep the legacy startup_states gate,
since they do highstate mid-setup.

Also add the marker to setup.virt for salt-cloud guests (replacing the
startup_states line removed in fabecb82) and to so-setup's non-manager branch.

# 4. Clean up. Once the node is actually RUNNING UEK8 the stock kernel packages are dead

# dnf's protect_running_kernel refuses to erase the booted kernel-core, so the removal
